. >> host: another thing you wrote about and people commented on was that rush limbaugh and sean hannity and george bush are at greater risk of assassination van barack obama. >> guest: as a fun part of the book. in the last chapter i point out i wouldn't have mentioned it if they haven't brought it up so much other ad campaign you keep hearing about this unique rest of, is that being assassinated because he is black in and this is unlike any other president or any other presidential candidate in the call in for a special secret service protection and article about i'm so worried review it and there was some liberal in britain sank in the is elected he will be assassinated so i wouldn't have mentioned if they haven't been dangling the big red tape in front of me but in point of fact pretty much every presidential assassination or attempted assassination in the history of america was committed by a liberal. some version have entered his communist palestinian extremists and there are a couple who didn't particularly have politics someone include john wilkes booth in that and john hinckley,

what did rush limbaugh and others from fox news let this guy go by? why did christian leadership endorsed this guy? guest: it is a great country. you can say anything you want if you do not believe in the laws. the supreme court does not tell me what to do, i believe in it, it is not legal. fine, make a choice. run for yourself, become president -- we will debated. that is part of the backdrop, anger and frustration that people have, that is the backdrop for the next campaign. host: here, a reporter spending new year's eve in iowa. the following tuesday was in new hampshire. it was an extraordinary five-day window that shaped the race. guest: no question, that was one the most intense periods in the campaign. january 3, barack obama wins iowa, and it easily in the three-way race. host: what about john edwards? what if he had guest: won iowa it is one of the great if's. even if john edwards had one eye when he could not have been the nominee -- even if he hadwon iowa. if obama one had finished third in iowa i think his chances would have been damaged.

we sought to play out in front of our eyes, the rise of fox news and rush limbaugh, legal challenges that docked the clinton administration, the robust talking points and political activity we are all seeing played out today in this debate. that stuff all was brand new. david brock writes about this eloquently in his new book. it took us a long time to figure this out. one reason i got so excited in 2003 when i first met marcos and jerome and i started reading the blog every night. you saw average, everyday americans just riding, people from small towns saying i just gave $25 to howard dean tonight, the first time i ever gave money to a campaign. i feel like i have taken a step to making my country better. [applause] in my mind, that effort became about -- i was sitting up in my attic in my house late at night, a obsessed with the dean blog. my wife thought i had gone crazy. i was experiencing politics in real time with real passion and real people, making it clear that they wanted a chance to participate in their democracy and to make their country better. there were dissatisfied wi

that is why they hate rush limbaugh, he makes fun of the left. daily kos is good about beating and conservatives. most of you do not live in washington, d.c. or new york. you live somewhere else and so you don't have to cut it as cocktail parties and be beaten down all the time. the second thing i encourage you to do is to get the tools. there is no excuse for not having the tools. get the training. it's not enough to come to one conference and think that you now know everything that there is. it is a constant learning process. i am always striving to be a better writer. go read books. i would encourage you to get the logistical tools, whether a black bearing ore and i found allies you to videotape things -- you know, like town hall meetings? a video camera might come in handy at those events. tweet from your hand-held device. everyone should be doing that. you should all be on twitter. no. 3 is, to get network. there are a lot people in this room that you need to know. get to know them. this is a non-partisan think so there are libertarian group

people like rush limbaugh and i cat think of the name on fox news, he really irritates me. i mean, barack obama cannot do anything, he can't even -- with all the people sittingomething critical. but i want to ask a question, sir. do you think he's going to become a great president? >> guest: it is too early to say. how can you do that? or could be a great president was something that he thought about at the earliest stages of trying to decide whether or not to run. and again this is pretty much the second chapter of the book where, you know, he and his friends are discussing what makes a good president, in his opinion the sort of mixture of the person and the time and that is why he thought ronald reagan was probably the great president and even though he opposed pretty much every single one of his policies the character, the leadership of the individual with the time and the country boss ready for that kind of change. now he went public with that approach and that observation around the time of the nevada caucus and the south carolina primary and frankly it drove president
